Exploration applied to CSMs: A major economic challenge!

18 October 2021

WHY EXPLORATION APPLIED TO CSMS?

It’s no secret that modern society is constantly evolving, especially when it comes to new technologies. Whether it’s smart appliances, electric cars, telecommunications, aerospace, or one of the dozens of other sectors, they all have one thing in common: they are entirely dependent on the supply of critical and strategic minerals (CSMs). Moreover, this demand will continue to grow in the coming years due to the energy transition. The desire to achieve a low-carbon economy is driving up the demand for CSMs and is already a major economic issue for Quebec. However, there is a positive: Quebec and its mineral exploration companies are already contributing to the extraction and marketing of strategic minerals, as the province is a producer of nickel, niobium, graphite, lithium, vanadium, and other rare-earth elements.

With the goal of establishing an integrated industry to support this transition, the Government of Quebec introduced the Québec Plan for the Development of Critical and Strategic Minerals 2020–2025 (QPDCSM) in 2020. A total of $4.25 million is being invested to increase CSM development and exploration activities. In addition, some of the resources needed to develop and enhance mining potential, a key sector of the Quebec economy, will be made available. With a forward-looking industry like ours, it was clear that we had to offer conferences on the subject.

EXPLORATION APPLIED TO CSMS AT XPLOR 2021

Xplor’s fourth block of presentations will take place on the afternoon of October 27. This last block is specifically dedicated to exploration applied to CSMs. We strongly believe that this subject is worth a full block, since it is so relevant to Quebec’s mineral sector.

We have invited a number of speakers to speak on the subject, including Alexander Gysi, Serge Perreault, Michel Houlé, Jonathan Lafontaine, and Christopher Kelly and Katharin Pavan of Wallbridge Mining who will be discussing the Grasset (Ni-Cu-PGM) project in northern Abitibi. You won’t want to miss it! All of the talks will cover subjects related to CSMs, such as rare earth elements (REEs) in critical mineral deposits, the geodiversity of metallogenic environments for CSMs, the potential of mafic to ultramafic CSM systems in Canada, and the new government program to support CSM exploration in Quebec.

Register now to reserve your spot and make sure you don’t miss any part of these forward-looking presentations!
